Dear Queer,

I am a heterosexual female. Can I write to you for advice?

From, A New Fan

Hi, New Fan,

Ok, so here’s the thing. The hardest part of writing this column is the inability to ask follow-up questions to gain clarity before responding to those seeking advice. Your question is a great example. Do you mean:

Hey Dear Queer, I’m aware we live in a society that prioritizes heterosexuals who take up the high majority of public space. I want to be respectful of your column and not take up even more space by inserting myself as a heterosexual woman into a space intended for queer folks. Is your column for everyone or only LGBTQ+ people?

Or, do you mean:

Hey Dear Queer, You give really good advice and I want some of that. But I don’t want you to think I’m queer too, because I’m not. I don’t have any insecurities at all about my sexuality- especially not the kind where I’d need to announce to a stranger I’ve never met that I’m straight, even though I’m writing that stranger anonymously.

Or, do you mean:

Hey Dear Queer, It feels really weird to not know if I can write in and ask for advice or not. I’m always welcomed anywhere I go because Jesus tells me so. Plus, I have blond hair and blue eyes
