My roommates are a lesbian couple, and they invited me to go to Pride with them. I’m straight and have never been to a queer event. What’s it like?

Hello! Can I please say how excited I am for you? Pride is a monumental event in this country, something every individual ought to experience at least once in life. Kinda like New York, or eating sushi.

Depending on your whereabouts, Pride can look quite different when it comes to size. Whether it’s a small town march of 100 or a big city parade of 1 million, the overwhelming feeling of belonging is tangible. If you live close to a metropolitan city, I’m guessing your roommates will prioritize the Dyke March, as most queer folks do. The Dyke March versus the Pride Parade is kinda like tourists versus locals. Tourists go to what’s obvious (Pride Parade), but the locals know where it’s at (Dyke March). When you are surrounded by thousands of empowered womxn taking over the streets, it’s a high like no other.
